Terms & refunds

These terms apply when you use custombookstudios.com or buy a book from us. Custom Book Studios ("we", "us") is based in Damascus, Maryland. By making a preview or placing an order, you agree to these terms and to our privacy policy.
Who can order
You must be 18 or older. By uploading a photo, you confirm that you are the child's parent or legal guardian, or that you have their permission, and that you have the right to use the photo. Please don't upload photos of anyone else, or photos you don't have the right to use.
How your book is made
Each book is personalized for you. Our stories are original works written for Custom Book Studios. The illustrations of your child are created with artificial-intelligence image tools in our storybook style, from the photo you provide. AI-drawn illustrations are artistic interpretations: your child's character is designed to resemble them, but small differences from page to page (for example in clothing details or background) are part of the illustrated style. If a likeness is clearly wrong, that's what our free redo is for.
The free preview shows your child's character and the book cover. The finished book follows the same style.
Prices and payment
- Prices are shown in US dollars on the site and at checkout. Printed books also have a shipping charge, shown at checkout before you pay. Sales tax is added where required.
- Payment is taken by Stripe when you place your order.
- Discount codes can't be combined unless we say so, and have no cash value.
Delivery
Ebooks
Your ebook is a PDF, normally ready within a few minutes of payment. We email you a download link, and you can also download it from your order page. It's for personal, non-commercial use: you may print copies for your family and share it within your household, but please don't sell or publish it.
Printed books
Softcover and hardcover books are printed on demand by our print partner and shipped to the address you give at checkout, within the United States. Printing usually takes a few business days, and then shipping time depends on the option you choose. Delivery estimates and holiday dates are estimates, not guarantees, because printers and carriers can be delayed, especially in December. Please double-check the shipping address; we can't redirect a package once it has shipped.
Redos, refunds and replacements
- A page doesn't look right? Email us within 30 days of your order and tell us which page. We'll redraw it free and send you the updated book. For printed books, we'll fix it before printing if you tell us quickly; if it has already printed and the problem is ours, we'll reprint it.
- Still not happy? If we can't make it right, we'll refund you.
- Damaged or lost in the mail? Email us a photo of the damage (or let us know it never arrived) within 30 days of the estimated delivery date, and we'll send a replacement at no cost.
- Changed your mind? Because every book is made just for you, we can't accept returns of printed books for a change of mind. You can cancel a printed order for a full refund until it goes to the printer. Just email us right away.
- Mistakes in what you typed (like a misspelled name or the wrong address) aren't covered by the free redo once the book has printed, but we'll always try to help. The ebook can be corrected free of charge.

Content you give us
You keep any rights you have in your photo and dedication message. You give us permission to use them only to make, deliver, and support your order, as described in our privacy policy. Please don't send us anything offensive, illegal, or that you don't have the right to use. We may refuse or cancel an order (with a full refund) if we believe it breaks these terms.
Our content
The stories, artwork style, illustrations, website, and brand belong to Custom Book Studios. Buying a book gives you a personal license to enjoy it as described above.
Limits on our responsibility
We work hard to make every book wonderful, but the site and books are provided "as is". To the extent the law allows, our total responsibility for any claim related to an order is limited to the amount you paid for that order, and we aren't responsible for indirect losses. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under consumer protection law that can't be limited.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Maryland, USA. If there's ever a problem, please contact us first. Most things can be solved with a quick email.
Changes
We may update these terms from time to time. The version on the site when you place your order applies to that order.
